About
the Series
|
CodeNotes®, a joint venture with Random House Books, is a new concept in
computer-book publishing. This series was designed for the software developer
who needs to come up to speed quickly on a new language or technology.
Most programming books give equal weight to all areas of a given technology,
forcing a developer to spend time sorting out the critical aspects. CodeNotes®
takes a different approach, presenting the core aspects of a technology up
front and focusing on the key elements needed to implement it immediately.
CodeNotes contains highly technical material in a format and style that is
efficient and instantly useful. CodeNotes® is a unique resource for developers,
bridging the gap between comprehensive manuals and pocket references.

Introducing
CodeNotes Gold |
CodeNotes is proud to introduce a new feature called CodeNotes Gold. From time
to time we will be posting longer articles on specific technology applications.
To kick things off, we have two new articles on building clients for
Microsoft's MapPoint Web Service:

Website Migration |
We have recently ported www.codenotes.com from Java to ASP.NET using the Java
Language Conversion Assistant. You can check out the
JSP to ASP.NET Migration guide to see more about how and why we
performed the conversion. If you are interested in discussing the technical
aspects of a conversion with the JLCA, please check out the
JLCA forum.
First, it should be said that there was absolutely nothing wrong with our J2EE
based architecture. It served us faithfully and reliably for almost two years.
The reasons we chose to migrate had more to do with cost of ownership than any
deficits in the technology. Although we are great fans of J2EE (and have
written a book on the subject!) we are also fans of .NET technology because of:
-
its support for many languages
-
its abstraction of low-level considerations
-
its built-in versioning and version control
-
and the drag-and-drop method of web development.
Although we are certain that our readers can (and will!) find caveats in
each of these points, .NET, in our specific case, simplified our maintence and
development tasks.
"I bought two of your CodeNotes books and I'm a true believer. Well written and
concise, I'll quickly snatch up the rest as they become available."
